Cannons at The Novo
Los Angeles // September 2022
Review by Jamie Hampton
Tucked away in Downtown Los Angeles, The Novo is a discrete club that has hosted a variety of shows over the years. The venue is split into two different sections, with different levels in each to ensure a good view no matter your seat.
Exclusively booked by Goldenvoice, The Novo specializes in putting on shows by emerging artists. This week, Cannons took the stage in an exciting sold out hometown show.
Cannons, most widely known for their hit single “Fire For You” being placed in an episode of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever, originated in Los Angeles in 2013 and since has rocketed towards stardom.
From start to finish, Cannons put everything they had into their performance, leaving it all on the stage for the fans. The moment frontwoman, Michelle Joy, gracefully floated onto the stage the crowd was almost in a trance as they danced along with her to the opening track.
The high energy of their performance did not waiver as the show progressed. Joy danced and twirled around the stage, all while maintaining a strong connection with the crowd. It was clear to see the strong foundation of the fanbase, especially with it being a sold out hometown show.
Most of the show was spent showcasing tracks from the band’s sophomore album Fever Dream, which included tracks like “Hurricane,” “Strangers,” and “Tunnel of You.” While the crowd seemed to be filled mostly with diehard long-time fans, the new tracks were received with just as much anticipation as the older tracks that were sprinkled into the setlist.
All fans, new and old, erupted into a massive dance party when “Fire For You” was played at the end of the night. It was a moment where everyone was fully enjoying themselves, not thinking about anything else and just connecting with the music and those around them.
Joy expressed their love and appreciation for the fans multiple times throughout the evening, which paired with the impressive performance, made for an unforgettable night for fans.
Cannons is continuing on their North American fall tour, and upcoming dates can be found on their website.
