Who is heartspace?
hi, i'm heartspace, an indie synth pop artist from oklahoma! i crave authenticity and vulnerability. my photography and music are built on just that: raw emotion. my favorite moments to capture are the completely candid ones. that’s why a lot of my work is shot at ponyboy, where you’ll find a crowd full of the most accepting and joyful people, dancing the weekend nights away. i also have an affinity for concert photography. given that i am a musician myself, this is where two of my greatest loves collide. after years of capturing bands and stages, i’ve been excited to give more attention to my own music in the last few months. i was humbled by the response to my first release 'candles', that came out a little over a month ago. today, my second single 'text back', is available everywhere. in this particular relationship, it went from burning 'candles' and hot showers, to can't even get a 'text back'. i hope you’ll keep listening to see how our story plays out.
What was the inspiration behind the single?
“text back” was written about the same relationship as my first single, “candles.” one of the worst things a person can do is ignore me. this particular ex has left me on read countless times. when “candles” was released, he reached out to tell me he was proud of me. for the first time since i met him in 2017, i didn’t reply to him. i left him on “read,” and wrote “text back.” this song is literally my reply to his text, in song form.
What’s been the process behind creating your music? You’ve been a creative force for many years— what other mediums have helped influence writing your music?
i create what i feel. i write for my emotions to have an outlet. making music has always been a form of therapy for me, i just never shared much of it, ’til now. i am also a photographer which makes me a very visual person. because of that, i like to be very clear and direct with my lyrics. i use a lot of imagery so that the listener sees a scene painted in their mind. i want my music to be an experience you can feel.
How have the current events going on in the world affected you— in your music/photography/ect or life in general?
covid-19 and quarantine have been very hard for my little extrovert soul. i miss my people and my favorite places, kissing strangers, and learning their stories. but it has given me the time to focus on bringing my music to life. putting my music and feels out into the world has always been a desire of mine. I’m an open book and i love sharing intimate parts of my story with others. im grateful that this life pause, as it has allowed me to finally accomplish that. more recently, the black lives matter movement has been heavy on my heart. this change is long overdue and i hope to be able to use my platform as an artist to fight for what’s right. i will always stand by my black brothers and sisters.
