California’s sweetheart Jay Som returned to Minneapolis this Wednesday for a stellar sold-out show at 7th St Entry. Jay Som, the stage name of Melina Duterte, led her band through an all-too-short set that celebrated both 2019’s Anak Ko and some older fan-favorites.
Fellow California-resident Boy Scouts, fronted by Taylor Vick, opened the night with songs off of Free Company. Vick’s delicate voice and soothing melodies eased the crowd into the performance. The songwriting throughout the album is incredible, and it was a treat to hear live in a smaller venue like 7th St Entry.
Jay Som finally took to the stage to tamed cheers despite the show’s sold-out status. “Nighttime Drive” was a particular highlight, it’s steady beat highlighted by the stronger live bass-line. Despite the shortness of her set, Duterte’s presence was magic. Anak Ko is one of my favorite releases of 2019 thus far and it was an absolute treat to hear live. There is such a power in hearing an album you love live for the first time. With all of Jay Som’s most dedicated Minneapolis fans in attendance, the venue felt warm and welcoming. It was a magical show.
