Marika Hackman returned to Minneapolis last Monday, over two years since her last performance in the city. With support from LA-based Girl Friday, Hackman delivered an exceptional performance. The night acted as a celebration of Any Human Friend, released in August. Hackman’s third studio album is a gorgeous feat of lyrical and melodical beauty. One song flows into the next, yet each tune contributes something unique to the overall experience.
Starting off the set with “wanderlust,” Hackman was able to showcase the album transition into “the one.” Songs from 2017’s I’m Not Your Man followed and the energy in the room shifted. The audience become more comfortable and Hackman settled into the set. She paused to joke about the “saucy” nature of “all night,” a song that champions oral sex. The openness of Any Human Friend is one of its best qualities. Hackman’s lyrics are so incredibly honest and blunt, discussing subjects ranging from love, sex, emotion and power.
Halfway through the set Girl Friday left the stage to allow Marika Hackman to sing to her fans one-on-one. This tone shift came at the perfect time and regrounded the show through Hackman’s connection and appreciation of the audience. Unfortunately, the night had to come to an end and “Blahblahblah” was a perfect way to do it. Any Human Friend is one of the best releases of 2019 so far and we’ll be eager for Marika Hackman’s return to the states, hopefully playing larger and larger venues. Now is the time to become a fan.
Marika Hackman concludes her US tour next week in CA before EU shows in December and a newly announced UK tour beginning February of next year.
