As part of Lollapalooza’s official aftershow lineup, (Sandy) Alex G put on an intimate performance at The Empty Bottle last Saturday. Preceding his appearance at the music festival, the late night show offered a chance for more dedicated fans to hear deeper cuts and old favorites.

The completely dark space, lit by a few lights and a lone disco ball, was a perfect setting for an Alex G show. Alex and his band took the stage to “Life is a Highway,” which seems to be their walkout song of choice (at least in the past three years I’ve seen them play). Opening with “After Ur Gone” off of 2014’s DSU, I was immediately hooked.

You never know what you’re going to get with a (Sandy) Alex G show. I was expecting an intimate look at upcoming House of Sugar (set for release September 13) but instead I was treated to favorites I had forgotten from past releases. The show continued with songs dispersed throughout each of his albums. One highlight of the night included an energetic playing of “Sportstar” with Alex behind the keyboard.

The night ended with audience requests, and after playing “Soaker,” “Sarah,” and “Adam,” the crowd was left satisfied with a perfect set. Even after seeing Alex and his band perform five times now, I still can’t wait for their upcoming fall tour. You can purchase tickets here.
